Seven students from The University of Alabama interned in Washington, DC this summer as part of the inaugural class of Capitol Scholars. Fourteen total students across the UA System were chosen for the program.

The Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership at The University of Alabama recently announced the 39 students selected as the inaugural class of Shelby Scholars - an undergraduate program within the Institute.

This fall, 110 University of Alabama students are receiving hands-on, innovative and advanced educational experiences with dozens of companies and organizations across the United States through UA's Cooperative Education Program during the fall 2024 semester. In the Cooperative Education Program, students alternate periods of full-time study with periods of full-time employment. This program offers work related to the academic major or career interests of each student. While in school, students carry regular course schedules. While on co-op, they work with professionals in their fields who supervise their training and work. At work, co-op students earn competitive salaries and may receive benefit packages in addition to valuable job experience. Participants maintain their full-time student status while at work and have priority registration status each semester through graduation.

Alabama men's golfers Canon Claycomb, Jones Free and Thomas Ponder have been named Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Scholars, the organization has announced.

For a closer look at campus tree life, graduate student David Phillips, a doctoral student and the student representative on the Landscape and Grounds Committee, has developed an urban forest tree tour for the UA campus map. Featuring 35 points of interest, the urban forest tree tour begins at Marr's Spring, a natural fresh water source that once supplied all of campus. Phillips included general species information for each tree on the tour along with any notable details.

Graduate student Ethan Iaia received a prestigious fellowship from the Department of Energy's Office of Science to study catalysts in pursuit of clean energy and decarbonization. He is one of only 86 students nationwide selected for this award. Iaia will receive funding and an opportunity to work with top researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Alabama's Anne Marie Hiser picked up the Southern Regional Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award for her dedication, leadership and achievement both on and off the court for the Crimson Tide women's tennis team.
